It’s one of those days.
I’m sitting at work thinking about money. I do that every day. Money, money, money. Then the other thoughts pile on: a YouTube channel, a store, some way out. Until I feel ready for any of that, the thinking goes here.
I’m the person everyone thinks has everything together. I don’t. It’s not about pretending. It’s about doing it when I have to. And it’s hard to say that to people who know you. So this anxiety needs somewhere to go, and this is where.
It’s called SPENT because I am.
I’ve spent my time, my money, my energy and my resources trying to get away. So I’m spent. Mentally, physically, spiritually, bank-accountly. I don’t know if you can write down sounds, but you know the one.
At the start of this year I read Your Money or Your Life by Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez. I went in hard. I was debt-free for three weeks.
Then I went back in.
The weird thing is I know exactly what I spent the money on. I don’t regret any of it. But those are the things I look at now, every time it’s time to pay this debt back.
Today I listened to Vicki Robin in an interview. I think she and Joe found something real. It’s a philosophy for what you do once you don’t need money. Which is funny, because the book is called Your Money or Your Life. It’s not about being rich at all.
People think the opposite of debt is riches. I think the opposite of debt is purpose.
There’s no outline for this memo. I’m going to write down what I’m thinking about money, every day, and just get the thoughts out. I’m good at spotting patterns. Do this long enough and the pattern shows up on its own.
I’m back in debt. But that one book changed my life anyway, and these daily are my way of reconnecting with it. My life is more important than the money. I need to keep hearing that.
I’m spent. Let’s move on.

P.S. Next on the list is Mr. Money Mustache. As far as I can tell he never wrote a book. He wrote a blog, and the blog made him famous. I’m going to read it and report back.
